Eating right again

So, as I've said before I did get totally off track when it comes to food. Not only did I eat wheat again (bad thing since I'm allergic to it), but also I didn't eat proper meals. So through snacking and wheat I packed ca. 5 - 6 kg on my small frame (1.62 m).

Since I  got back from Leipzig after christmas I have turned this eating thing slowly around. Right now I've been for 2 whole weeks off wheat. Wohoo. And since Sunday I'm back to eating proper meals again.

I'm positive that I will fit into my running clothes again by the end of January.

Back

Well, long time no see.

Thing is, I had other stuff on my mind and in the last few years much has changed. I moved to another part of Germany for  a new job and I haven't done much training since then. Even though I have perfect conditions, now that I live in Karlsruhe.

Since I gained a few pounds and am missing the training and blogging, I've decided to get back into the thing and after all I haven't even achieved the goals along the way to the big goal. Read: no finished marathon so far.

So, my goals for 2014:

  1. Get rid of 4.5 kg to fit into my running clothes again.
  2. Start with running again.
  3. Finish at least one 10 k race this year, if possible under 70 minutes.
  4. Get a road racing bike.
Not much, but enough to get back into it.

In any case having this big goal again helps me tremendously. Last year I had no big goal and it gave me nothing but boredom and even weirder I didn't eat right. Just to fit into my clothes isn't enough of a goal for me. Who would've thought?!

Anyway, what have you guys been up to since I left the circus?

Have a great new year everyone.

On Day 8 make 7 in the morning and 8 at night

Pushups that is. Yep, forgot to make my seven on Saturday and had to do them on Sunday. At the moment this isn't such a problem, but as soon as I get to the higher numbers...  Just think, I forget at Day 77 and therefore have to make 155 on Day 78. Oyveh.

Well, I made up for this with stuffing me silly through yesterdays lunch. My Grandpa had invited us for his 88th birthday. I had a ukrainian Soljanka, then a steak "Strindberg" (without fries) and then topped it off with icecream. I skipped dinner without missing it one bit(e). Well, as I've said before, I'm getting better at balancing out my diet. ;)

Baltic Sea shortly after the sun had set.

April weather is on my side, so far I can use my bike for every needed way. But at Friday I will use public transport, because at 9:30 AM I have another ...

I wish all of you a wonderful new week, fantastic training (weather) and enjoyable food.

Bad news for Starbucks

Yes, I still love Starbucks. Yes, I will still go there and ponder things and drink frappucinos and chocolate mochas. But no, I won't buy their chocolate truffle cake anymore and eat it. The reason?

It's not worth the feeling unwell afterwards. The pleasure of eating it lasts about an hour, if I eat really slow. My hurting stomach lasts the whole night. 1 hour vs. 8 hours. This is in serious disequilibrium, even without the other bad effects like bad skin for days afterwards. So, as sad as it is, no more Starbucks truffle cake or any other of their baked goods for me.

I've learned all this after I had my After-a-job-interview-treat last evening. I've been for another interview, this time lo and behold in my home town, and afterwards I went to Starbucks and bought my treat. I ate it (took me maybe 20 minutes) and had a complaining stomach 3 hours later. Yeah well, it was my own stupid decision. I've been free of grains for quite some time now, it's only logical that my body would be mad at me.

So, lesson learned. Back to Paleo.

And listen to your body.

Paleojourney - A Mac Photo Booth Diary - Week 6 - Rollercoaster ride

This past week was quite taxing for me. I've learned a lot in terms of the changes my body goes through at the moment, how I can help it and in terms of business.
Nuff said.

New week, new challenges, new goals.

Goals for this week:
1. Clear my desk. ;-)
2. Eat 100% paleo/primal/real food.
3. Wear a really cool outfit everyday.
4. Take the 9 flights of stairs to my flat everyday once. (Did you ever realize that there are easy and tough stairs? When I take the 9 flights to my flat I'm a bit out of breath, but I'm fine. Not so at the public library, there I'm out of breath when I reach the second floor and nearly had to stop for rest on the third floor. {Good thing somebody was walking behind me, so it would've hurt my pride to stop.})
5. Do at least one sprint in this week.
6. Do some strength training everyday. Today it's arms.
7. Stay scale-free the whole week. (Next weighing is planned for March 1st.)

Have a magical week everyone.

Paradigm Shift

Okay, so this morning I stepped on my scale out of a strong interest. What I saw let me do my happy dance. 59,7kg - 131,4 lbs Finally cracked the 60!

But in fact this isn't the start of the story or the paradigm shift. Those happened yesterday.

Yesterday, I couldn't eat due to mental stress. I won't tell you why yesterday was so stressfull. In any case not eating, because I'm under stress is a totally new thing for me. Before yesterday I usually ate (binging on sweets) when under stress, this was even so last Friday. But not yesterday. So I guess there really was a paradigm shift happening in the last days. Which is amazing!!

Today I'm back to eating normal, my normal = Paleo. Though the mental stress has lessened the reason for it is still there. Well, I'll hold strong and fight on.

forward and then retreat, forward retreat

That's my life at them moment. For every 2 steps forward I retreat one. I move more and more, but I eat bad things when I'm down, because life is a bit uncertain at the moment.

I still don't have a place in Stuttgart to stay, since the dormitory is out of the question, because I'm too old!! Now I'm looking for flat share and will go to Stuttgart on Saturday to meet the people living in an ultra cool flat, which has some added advantages, like being in my price range and central.

Meanwhile my parents are driving me crazy with their "helpful" advices and hinting that I might not be abled to get this Masters degree or do the job properly. As if I'd do this for the first time! I know, they care, but do they have to treat me like a ten year old? Don't think so.

But at least the weather is nice (sunshine), my jeans fit and Chris is coming to Leipzig today. So I'm fairly happy at the moment.

Fighting the habits and cravings

Goodness me. I thought I was over this, but since Monday I need to make sure that I don't come to close to any baked goods, because I really, really, really lust after some chocolate cake or raisin rolls. So far I stood strong, lucky me that there seems to be no place in town that has eclairs though I know there is a certain Brasserie that might have them. Luckily this would mean quite a detour for me and so I am pretty safe from that one. And thank the flying Spaghettimonster for Brazil nuts, they are my saviour.

Doesn't this sound amazing?

Elle UK Horoscope for Virgo in February 2011
As February opens, you’ll welcome a fabulous New Moon in your house of work. For most other signs, the busy bee energy can be a bit of a drag, but for you, it’s like manna from heaven. You’ll be able to organise rather than agonise for the first two weeks of the month. On the 2nd, the New Moon (also the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit) invites you to plan out your next six months of success. A colleague could give you some major praise, you might get a promotion, or even make a big change – from one job to another. Whatever happens, don’t let anything stress you out, because it’s all good this time, Virgo. With the Sun also highlighting your work and schedule sector through the 18th, you’re on the radar of VIP’s. After this date, the energy turns toward love and partnerships. With Mercury, Mars, the Sun and Uranus all traversing your relationship zone during the last ten days of the month, you may be thinking about your significant other 24/7. If you’re single, this is an excellent time to focus on manifesting your soul mate. He’s out there and coming ever closer to you.

And it is so fitting!!
(I just LOVE it, when my horoscopes support me and what's coming next. Mind games, I tell you are so helpful. ;-P )

On to the food issue.
It seems starting cold turkey with the Whole30 (hey, that rhymes, *grin*) wasn't the smartest idea. Especially since I made the old mistake to focus on the foods I can't eat instead of those I can enjoy. Well you guess it already, I didn't eat according to plan. Since I'm a bit unsure of several food, because they some different articles on them on the Whole9 website, I've decided to "design" my own whole 30 program. As a matter of fact I make it up as I go along and concentrate on the good and real foods. Meaning, dairy except for butter is still out of the equation same goes for grains, rice, potatoes and nightshades (tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants), since I seem to be allergic to tomatoes "lately" (or maybe it's just the pesticides in them?).

With it I'm also changing my grocery shopping habits, I buy only produce that I can use up in the next 2-3 days. Which is an accomplishment in itself that I wanted to reach for years(!), since I used to buy a lot of produce and then most of it would rot away on my counter or in the fridge. This change has the added bonus of less waste and saving money, and since I won't have much space in the dormitory to store my food, this change of habits comes right at the time it is needed.

Speeking of habits: there are two other good changes.
1) Yesterday evening I finally went to bed at 10 PM (which was my goal) and read till 11 PM and then turned of the light to sleep. And I guess I got a full 8 hours of sleep, which I hadn't for the last weeks, even though it was my goal, since I got the important YES. No I just have to truly implement this going to bed early, jobstart is coming near in huge steps.
2) I'm only buying clothes that fit and that I need. I went shopping with my friend K yesterday evening. She started working again last month, after her parents time (2 years in Germany) and is in dire need of a professional wardrobe. In any case I still need some new professional clothes too and I was lucky to find a sleek cardigan made of a nice fabric and a cut that flatters me. It took me about one year and a lot of shopping (looking around and trying out) to find this cardigan.
I also found a really beautiful dress in red, since it's the new collection and I'm currently fighting my fat successfully I didn't buy it yesterday (major accomplishment).

However I still have to battle with myself over food. Yesterday was really off, I always wanted to eat sweets. Horrible. But I stood strong, nothing unhealthy passed my mouth. Yeah. Looks like I'm developing some willpower at last.

And you, some accomplishments?

What a great start

for a new week.

Three good things in one morning:
  1. I had an awesome apple-omelette for breakfast. It was made of 3 eggs, 1/2 apple and salt/pepper/"fine herbes" spice, baked/fryed in coconut oil. Yummy and quite filling, I will cut down to 2 eggs tomorrow. This is so much better than my chocolate proteine shake. I love it. Now I just have figure out different recipes and get faster.

  2. I looked in the mirror before I left the house and thought "Wow, I look beautiful". This is a FIRST. I mean, the best I thought of me until now was: "Not bad". And this morning I've thought somthing this nice when I looked at myself. I'm making major progress here!!

  3. I figured out how to stop sabotaging myself. You know until now I had some habits that were leading me away from my goals. These habits I had taken on, because of my rebellious nature. Now, I use my inner rebel to get to my goals! For example: Caring for my body. Most people don't care well for their body, they eat wrong, smoke, don't exercise, get inadequate sleep, don't groom themselves. So I'm a rebel and do all that and will look fantastic and live fantastic even at 90. You get my drift? Same goes for style and other stuff.
So all in all this is a fantastic start into a new week.

I wish all of you a magical week.

What I like about Starbucks

That I can trink lovely beverages and eat THE chocolate cake while working undisturbed in a great, comforting atmosphere with people around me that like the same things that I like, for example: Apple (MacBook Pros), stylish clothes and reading, learning, chatting with friends or just enjoying to be in company of other people while doing your own things.

Pics from my trainride to Villingen in the Black Forest on Tuesday. Took those pics between Mannheim and Karlsruhe.

Starbucks really succeeded in creating a place where you feel comfortable to spend time working or hanging out. Wished they had longer opening hours in the evening 8:30 PM or 9 o'clock is just toooooooo early to close shop.

I'm so crazy about this place, I'd love to buy one of those small bistro tables. Either the one with the writing or the one with the chess board. And don't get me started on the pictures. Sigh. You know what? I would love to have their interior design team to come to my kitchen and turn it into one with Starbucks flair. I'm really crazy about that company. And no, I didn't get payed to write this article.

What is your favourite "third place"?

Streamlining life

or at least my flat.

It is really funny, the longer I live on my own the more organized I become. (Wohoo) Since I made the "mistake" to take vitamin d in the evening I'm still farely awake and used the last half hour to clean and organize my kitchen (even more).

When I was a teen I always liked those places with lots of stuff, back then I really would have liked to live in one of those artsy places that you can find at www.theselby.com. Nowadays I still like to look at them and yes maybe stay there for a day or two, but I wouldn't want to live there anymore. These days I really like wide open spaces with some decoration but only some pieces, most surfaces should be free! What is also fascinating me is that even though my walls are bare, I feel fine. Okay, my entrance "hall" could use a bit of color. But my living/sleeping room is fine as it is. I have a monstrous desk, which houses tons of stuff, but I would like to have on of those "old" french, white and really filigree desks (only one or two drawers max). So currently I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of or reorganize all this stuff my monster desk houses. There is still an ikea bag full of stuff from my move, that I haven't put into my desk, simply for the reason of reducing it, before I put it into the desk. Looks like a good thing to do this Saturday, since I won't be going to swim with this darned cold.

I also realized that I work a lot better with a clear desk. Though I haven't managed the feat of having it constantly clear and organized, I'm a lot better now that I live in my own space. Same goes for my wardrobe. I've reorganized it last year and threw out tons of clothes, but I'm still feeling that there is tooo much clothing. I think I will sort out another bag of clothing this weekend.

You could say that I'm currently evolving from pack rat to streamlined "insert appropriate term here". This is so new to me, that I don't even know how to call it. And this goes on in every part of my life. I remember that one IT guy once told me after seeing my desktop, that he had never seen such an uncluttered desktop before! (*proudly grinning*)

In any case, I also noticed, that I get more and more "obsessive" about food presentation. Since I cook for myself now, I want my meals not only be paleo and delicious, but also to look good! And I mean good as in a foodie blog kind of way. When I went grocery shopping today, I went by the bakery and I just thought "Yuk". Not so much because I dislike grains and know how bad they are for me, but because the displayed food was so boring. Nearly everything was in some shade of brown. Seriously, why would anyone want to buy this boring stuff? Whatever...

I decided to really work on my presentation skills, when it comes to food (photography). I also have to take my cooking a step further, because I won't be abled to cook my lunch fresh in a few weeks. This means I have to come up with recipes for paleo food that I can prepare the night before without hassle while doing my dinner. Best would be some part of the dinner to take with me. Mmmh. And again, this food has to be healthy, yummy and look good (better than cafeteria food anyway). Quite a challenge.

Any helpful suggestions?

A fresh start

Well, well, Christmas morning is here and a new start for me. After indulging into christmas foods the last two weeks I'm back to the Paleo lifestyle from this morning on.

I've got a whole lot of reasons. My health being the main issue.

I started a new journal (word), where I will jot down what I ate, my sleep and exercise and the way I felt. The reason is that I still haven't found the right amount to eat and to keep my diet interesting.

I've started to listen to Robb Wolfs Podcast, which you find here: http://robbwolf.com/category/podcasts/
This podcast is truly AMAZING. I've learned sooooo much just listening to edition No. 3, I didn't get the older ones via iTunes.

Anyway, I doubled my Vitamin D intake and threw out the grains, legumes and dairy products (except for the milk) I still had in my kitchen. No excuses anymore. Paleo is the way to go for me.

So, what did Santa bring me? (He comes at Christmas Eve in Germany.) An ugly but wished for pot just for boiling eggs, a big salad bowl with lid and filled with fruits (yeah), teas, some chocolate, money, a purple umbrella with polka dots, a bodyshop shower gel. And I got myself a bag from "Quer" and a japanese dictionnary. Yes, I definitely start out now with learning japanese. I even have a blog for it now. ;-)

I hope your Santa brings you all that you yearned for and have a wonderful Christmas or whatever holiday you are celebrating.

Interviews went well, food test not really

Hey there. Just a short update.

Interviews: Splendid. The first one led to an in person interview in January. The second was actually the second for another job in person and it went well too. I will get notice before Christmas if I made it. When I went out of this interview I was totally excited and felt great.

Food: wellllll. Mark Sisson proposes in his "Primal Blueprint" the 80-20 rule. Which means it's alright to fall of the wagon every now and then. For special occasions like the holidays or some major family parties. The last two days I experimented with this and have come to the conclusion, that I have to do 100% to keep my body happy. Wednesday I ate 2 (german not american) small potatoes and a few bites of stollen (after all once a year I "should" take a bite). Well, I got tired just a few minutes after eating it and then when I wanted to walk back home, just a few minutes afterwards my legs told me: "you aren't seriously thinking of walking now, right?" They burnt after a few steps!!!

So there you have it, carbs are BAD for me.

The only thing that is worth feeling sluggish is Starbucks chocolate truffle cake. I shared a piece with my friends yesterday and miraculously I didn't feel totally sluggish. Well, maybe it was due to the fact I was already tired. It was a loonng day, yesterday.

On the weekend, I will make all the christmas presents, that I want to make. It's quite a bit of work.

That's it for today. Have a great weekend everyone.

Yes, yes, YEEEESSSSSSS - I beat Elliott today

In case you don't remember or are not familiar with him, Elliott is my dragon aka lazy a** alter ego. He likes to lounch on the couch all day long with some nice music, chocolate mountains, legs on the radiator and someone to cuddle. Until now most of the time he won. Today was different I won. Finally. Frankly, Elliott isn't as lazy as he used to be and I really want someone to cuddle too.

It was a hard battle today. Here is how it went. Since it was sunny outside I got Elliott following me walking the whole 5 k to the national library over snow and ice without any complaints. I think he enjoyed it quite a bit, since I had fed him with Zucchini-latkes before we left.
But as soon as we got to the library the reprieve was over and he started nagging. He wanted a candy bar, I was neither hungry nor did I have an appetite for a candy bar. A candy bar at that moment would have spoiled all my advances over the last few days. No reasoning with him, he continued with nagging for the next 2 hours. You think it's funny? Try to concentrate on preparing an important job interview with a 500 pound dragon sitting next to you and screaming "I want candy and I want to go home, not to that stupid piano concert" in your ear. At 5 PM I decided to read Marksdailyapple.com Forum with the success stories again. And that quieted Elliott down.
At 5:30 PM I gave back my books and went to the cafeteria to drink a hot tea (it was freezing in this darned reading room) and eat the rest of my zucchini-latkes. I made sure to forego the nice looking cakes and candy.
Then I walked another 4 k to the music college, Elliott was really unhappy about it and I wasn't exactly happy either. Because it seemed like I walked through a blizzard. And you know what, the big music room where the concert was, was also waayyyyyyyyy too cold. After the concert I walked another k through the blizzard to my streetcar station and went home.

Now I'm enjoying a hot peppermint tea, fish, tomatoes with feta cheese and sour cream.

You know what is also really funny, I will have another interview tomorrow, though this one is a phone interview (they called when I was at the supermarket today). We'll see how it goes with both interviews, the other one is real life on Thursday in Dresden again. Cross your fingers that I finally make it.

That's it. I finished my meal, time for a good nights sleep in my warm and comfy bed.

Food pictures

Thank you for your concern. However I think I'm having to clear something up. I'm not eating less!! I just eat different. I eat a lot more proteins (fish, fowl, meat, eggs) and good fats (olive oil, coconut oil, creme fraiche is at the moment my favourite) and more fruits and veggies. I'm simply avoiding food that has a high insulin response. Other than that I don't have any restrictions such as the amount. I eat as much as I like and until I'm sated.

And besides, we all know that I'm lacking self discipline, I couldn't starve myself and I don't want to. Besides food is fun, why would I cut out the fun.

Since I have gone so long without pictures on this blog, here is some food porn of the last few days. And yes today and yesterday I was also 100% primal. (Okay, maybe somewhere I have some discipline stored, for occasions like this. *snicker* I also didn't buy the Snowwhitecake, which is an absolute favourite tastewise, but it leads me to feeling bloated and even asthma. Don't need that, thanks. )

Time for the food porn:

Grilled salmon with tomatoes and kiwis swimming in olive oil

selfmade tomato sauce with kiwis and creme fraiche

Dinner korean style, 2 broiled eggs, turkey hen, wakame and the tomato sauce

Todays korean style dinner, fish mix, 1 broiled egg, some grilled stripes of turkey hen, 1 apple, 2 spoons creme fraiche, wakame (not in picture because it hadn't finished soaking)

See? I'm not eating less, I'm just eating better. *grin*

KEEP MOVING FORWARD!!

Success

I've got good news. Primal eating works really well (for me). I reached last weeks goal, even though I ate horribly on Wednesday and Thursday.

Last weeks goal was reaching the 135,? lbs on my scale and I did it!!! I could hardly believe it when I read it yesterday morning. (I started out with 138 lbs last Sunday.)
So it is certainly true, skip grains and starchy/sugary foods and you'll get rid of this darned bodyfat. This means I'm sticking with the Primal lifestyle mainly, but I'll include triathlon training (which in Primal Blueprint terms is called chronic cardio and isn't considered a good thing), because I still have my Ironman goal. Though I will do it on fat metabolism and not carbs.

After these three days I'm pretty confident, that I will be abled to finally run another halfmarathon next year and maybe even a marathon. (Less fat, less "dead" bodyweight to lug a around;-) Seeing how training goes. I certainly won't make the same mistakes again. I'll build mileage up slowly and do a lot more strength and crosstraining (swimming and bike).

For the rest of December, I'll focus on the right food (sources, recipes and amount) and staying upright on Leipzigs streets (which is currently a feat in itself). In January, I'll start with "proper" swim training and hopefully my new job.

Okay, I've got some research to do for my next interview. See you in a bit.

Taste Bud Adventures - Salmon with tomatos and golden kiwis

After two days of eating too much bad food (christmas market and bad mood are the culprits), I'm finally back on the track. This is a quick recipe I just invented for todays lunch and it's delicious, healthy and inexpensive.

Ingredients:
1 piece of filet of salmon (150 to 250g)
a hand full of cherry tomatoes
1 golden kiwi
1 tablespoon of olive oil for the casserole

Method:
1. oil the casserole
2. put the thawed / fresh salmon in the casserole
3. dice the tomatoes and skinned kiwi, put them on the salmon
4. bake the salmon in an oven with 150°C for 15 to 20 minutes.

Enjoy.

Figuring food out

This Saturday I enjoyed an apartment day. Means, except for going grocery shopping I stayed home, cleaned and enjoyed my apartment.

What I found out is that I obviously don't eat enough! How come, you might ask. Well, yesterday was a day when I literally ate all day. But since I didn't have any sweets and didn't buy any sweets, I had to make do with what I had to eat. And this wasn't bad food, in fact it was all very delicious, however it was low in it's fat or carb content, so I ate and ate and ate.

I ate: 4 or 6 Kiwis, 3 persimons, 8 or 9 small meatballs, 1 proteinshake, cherrytomatoes with feta cheese, 1 tin of Scomber Mix (fish with vegetables in tomatosauce), 2 clementines and 3 pieces of dark chocolate (doesn't count as a sweet, because of it's low sugar content). You know the funny thing is: looking at this all I realize that this isn't much, but when I ate it I thought I was eating tons. I think my perception of food amounts is totally off. (I really don't know how vegans do it, do they eat constantly? Mind you, I admire them, because I know I couldn't do it and wouldn't want to for that matter.)

Funny thing, even though I thought that I was binge eating yesterday evening, (binging on kiwis, persimons and the fish tin) I lost about 1 pound of weight. This morning I weighed 137,4 lbs.

So, what am I going to do? I'll have to eat more, but how much more? I know that I get sick from eating grains or too many sweets. Last sunday I ate quinoa and felt sick the whole night, and I get eczema from eating bread! I really have to figure out how much more and what to eat
(recipes).

Primal food choices and two reasons for celebration

So, I finally moved out and am coming to my senses foodwise. Admittedly the move to more healthy food wasn't that easy and I'm still in it.

However I wanted to share some ideas.

Firstly, breakfast is important and since I want my metabolism to burn my bodyfat, I don't eat carbs (grains) for breakfast but drink a protein shake instead. This wasn't enough during the last weeks and since fruits give me a sugar longing after an hour or so I had to come up with something else to eat. Today I tried out grilled tomatoes with Schmand (sour cream, heavy cream?) It is tasty and very satisfying.

And it looks delicious too, don't ya think?

Another thing is, that in the evening when I read or watch something on my Mac, I tend to eat. Not because of hunger, it's more like a reflex. Yesterday I made myself some Quinoa and while it was satisfying mentally, my digestive system didn't like it at all. So I have to come up with some healthy and easily available snacks, since I'm really lazy in the evening. So this morning I boild 4 eggs and peeled them and then put them in a plastic container in the fridge.

Where they are ready for being eaten tonight and tomorrow night, when my reflex shows up for food.

Okay, the two reasons for celebration:

1. I'm still free of nasal spray after 6 months! Wohoo. This is the longest time of freedom in a decade.

2. Refilling my ferritin is working, I no longer need to sleep every afternoon. There are still days, when I need to lay down, but it's more like once a week or when I slept badly the night before. Success!!!

Now I just need to find a job. Right?

Have a great new week everyone!
